PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - With a pair of victories in the qualifying singles draw, junior Caitlin Whoriskey has advanced to the second day of the Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. She will square off with Chelsea Gullickson from Georgia on Wednesday for an opportunity to move on to play in the main draw.
The native of East Sandwich, Mass., began the competition with a dominating, straight-set triumph, 6-0, 6-4, over No. 66 Anastasia Revzina from Southeastern Conference rival Florida. The No. 37 ranked and 16th-seeded Whoriskey then claimed a come-from-behind win, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, over Notre Dame's Kelcy Tefft, who is ranked 43rd.
Whoriskey, the reigning doubles champion at the ITA All-American, will be unable to defend her title, however, as she and partner sophomore Maria Sorbello, ranked No. 33 in the nation, were defeated in the opening round by the 36th-rated UCLA duo of Yasmin Schnack and Ashley Joelson, 8-5.
Following this week's competition, the Lady Vols will next be in action Oct. 23-27 when they travel to the campus of Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C., to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Region Championships.
