PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - The No. 33-ranked University of Tennessee doubles tandem of junior Caitlin Whoriskey and sophomore Maria Sorbello closed out its stay on the West Coast Friday afternoon, falling in the final of the qualifying doubles consolation draw at the Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The Lady Vol duo dropped a tough, 8-3, decision to the No. 22-rated Cal combo of Marina Cossou and Claire Ilcinkas after picking up three straight victories in the previous two days.
Prior to today's action, Whoriskey and Sorbello stayed alive at the tournament with a pair of victories on Wednesday and another on Thursday. The Tennessee tandem first downed the Georgia team of Cameron Ellis and Naoko Ueshima, 8-5, before taking out the No. 37-ranked Duke duo of Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinzka, 9-8 (5), and the 38th-ranked pairing of Nadja Gilchrist and Monika Dancevic from Georgia, 9-7.
The Lady Vols will next be in action Oct. 23-27 when they travel to the campus of Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C., to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Region Championships.
