KNOXVILLE, Tenn.

Senior Vilmarie Castellvi and freshman Sabita Maharaj of the University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team each claimed the singles title in their respective flights Sunday afternoon at the St. Mary's Fall Tennis Classic in Knoxville. Castellvi, ranked No. 1 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over eighth-ranked Kate Pinchbeck of North Carolina in flight one. Maharaj defeated fellow rookie teammate Melissa Schaub, 6-3, 6-2, for the flight three crown.

In other action, senior Crystal Cleveland was dropped in the finals of flight two by North Carolina's Aniela Mojzis, 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Ashley Robards fell to Amy Walgenbach of Purdue in a battle for fifth place in flight four, 6-4, 6-1. In flight five, sophomore Breanna Kray won a 7-5, 6-1 decision over Carmen Torres of North Carolina State to claim third place. Kray won despite serving the entire match underhanded because of a nagging shoulder injury. Sophomore Melinda Morrow pulled out of her match with freshman teammate Megan Kerr in flight six due to an injury.

Castellvi will compete in the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships next weekend, Oct. 10-13, in Pacific Palisades, Calif., as the tournament's top seed. The championships are one of college tennis' three national championship events this year. The other two are the Omni Hotels National Indoors, taking place Nov. 7-10 in Dallas, Texas, and the NCAA Championships in May 2003. Castellvi, who has yet to drop a set this fall, will enter the tournament with a perfect 7-0 record.
