PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.
The University of Tennessee duo of senior Tammy Encina and junior Majen Immink have advanced to the consolation semifinal round of doubles qualifying play at the Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Women's Tennis Championships. After falling to No. 31 Cynthia Goulet and Jennifer McGaffigan of Illinois in the first round, the UT duo has won two straight matches in consolation play.
Encina and Immink, ranked 14th in the ITA preseason rankings, first cruised by Texas A&M's Roberta Spencer and Lauren Walker, 8-4, in the consolation first round. Although the Aggie duo was not ranked, Spencer does boast a rating of 16th with usual teammate Jessica Roland. In the quarterfinal round, the Lady Vol tandem dropped No. 47 Florencia Basile and Virginia Tomantis of Ole Miss by an 8-4 count.
The Tennessee pair will now face No. 49 Karin Coetzee and Katie Martzolf of Wake Forest on Thursday in the consolation semifinal round. Coetzee and Martzolf downed No. 40 Lorena Arias and Chris Martinez of Washington State, 8-6, in the previous round. Additionally, Encina, ranked No. 27 as an individual, will take on No. 63 Alicia Salas of Notre Dame when singles play begins on Thursday.
Following their return from the Golden State, Encina, Immink and the rest of the Lady Vols will return to competition at the June Stewart Invitational in Nashville, Tenn., over Oct. 17-19.
