Tammy Encina won in the first round of the ITA All-American Championships. |
Oct. 9, 2003
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.
University of Tennessee senior Tammy Encina followed the precedent set by California voters two days earlier and recalled her opponent, No. 63 Alicia Salas of Notre Dame, 6-4, 6-0, in the first round of the Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships on Thursday.
Encina, tabbed at No. 27 in the ITA preseason rankings, will now face a tough challenge as she takes on No. 6 Alice Barnes of Stanford in the second round on Friday. Barnes outlasted No. 29 Dianne Hollands of Arizona, 6-5, 4-6, 7-6(5), in the first round. If she advances past Barnes, Encina will face either No. 17 Zerene Reyes of Florida or No. 1 Agata Cioroch of Georgia in Friday's quarterfinal round. The tournament will continue with the semifinal rounds on Saturday and the finals on Sunday.
Following her return from the Golden State, Encina and the rest of the Lady Vols will be in action next at the June Stewart Invitational in Nashville, Tenn., over Oct. 17-19.
