PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.
Senior Vilmarie Castellvi, the nation's No. 1-ranked player, of the University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team suffered her first defeat of the fall in the round of 16 at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, falling to No. 67 Amber Liu of Stanford, 6-2, 6-4. The Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., is hosting the prestigious national championship event this year.
Castellvi's loss to Liu snapped her eight-match winning streak, during which she had not dropped a set to the opposition.
"Vilmarie did not play her best tennis today," said UT Co-Head Coach Mike Patrick. "Liu came out and played very aggressive and never let Vilmarie get into any kind of rhythm."
The next tournament on the Lady Vols' slate this fall is the June Stewart Invitational, Oct. 18-20, in Nashville, Tenn.
