Complete Results, Draws and Schedule

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team saw its first action of the 2010 USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships with the main singles and doubles draws getting underway on Thursday.

It was a banner day for the Big Orange, as all three doubles teams and five of the six singles players that competed reached the second rounds.

Tennessee co-head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick was pleased with her team's performance.

"First rounds are always really difficult because you're fighting nerves and excitement," Hahn-Patrick said."Our ladies did a great job staying focused and sticking to their gameplans."

Paired together for the first time in college, Brynn Boren and Maria Sorbello began the day in emphatic fashion, trouncing Safiyya Ismail and Jasmine Lee of Cincinnati, 8-0. Not to be outdone, the top-seeded duo of Rosalía Alda and Millie Nichols won its opening contest, 8-2, over Stephanie McLoughlin and Gabrielle Rubenstein of Butler.

Whitney Wofford and Jennifer Meredith rounded out the day with an 8-3 win over Carla Nava and Yuri Nomoto of MTSU.

In singles play, Sorbello showed no signs of rust in her first competition of the fall season, trouncing Lee, 6-1, 6-0. Hahn-Patrick said she liked what she saw from the nation's No. 35-ranked player today.

"She looked pretty solid," Hahn-Patrick said. "Obviously there's a lot she can build on, but for her first match coming back, she played well and didn't make a lot of unforced errors. She played smart."

Also advancing for the Lady Vols were Brynn Boren, Millie Nichols, Rosalía Alda and Whitney Wofford.

They advance to the second round of competition, where tougher matchups certainly await. Hahn-Patrick said her team needs to

"The longer you play (in a tournament), the tougher things get," Hahn-Patrick said. "It's going to be much more competitive tomorrow. The ladies just have to show up ready to play."

Doubles play resumes tomorrow with the round of 16 at 9 a.m. Singles main draw round of 32 matches will follow, starting no sooner than 10 a.m. After that, the round of 32 and 16 will be played in the consolation singles draw.

Results will be posted at the conclusion of each match on UTLadyVols.com, while updated draws and schedules will be available throughout the day.
