KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team enjoyed yet another strong performance on day three of the 2010 USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships on Friday at the Knoxville Racquet Club.
All five Lady Vols still in the main singles draw advanced to the round of 16 and two of three UT doubles tandems advanced to the quarterfinals.
Tennessee co-head coach Mike Patrick thought today was a solid all-around performance from his squad.
"Overall, today was a great effort from our team," Patrick said. "We have seniors playing like seniors and our freshmen have managed themselves well enough to get to this point. We're excited about tomorrow. We'll be playing some really quality opponents and it should be a good test."
The day began with Rosalía Alda and Millie Nichols defeating Ashleigh Witte and Ksenia Slynko of Cincinnati, 8-2. Brynn Boren and Maria Sorbello topped SEC rivals Misha Testerman and Marni Venter of Kentucky, 8-3 to advance.
Jennifer Meredith and Whitney Wofford fell to Mandy Brown and Julia Fellerhoff of Louisville, 8-5.
In singles, Alda continued her strong play, defeating Rachael Dillon of Vanderbilt, 6-2, 6-3.
Patrick likes what he has seen from Alda so far this fall.
"Rosalía is really starting to come into her own," Patrick said. "She is looking better and better each day. I'm real proud of her. Hopefully she can just keep her focus and do what she's been doing. If she does that, it will mean good things for our team."
Also advancing to the round of 16 were Maria Sorbello, Brynn Boren, Millie Nichols and Whitney Wofford.
Celebrating her 19th birthday, Wofford won 7-5, 7-5 over Ashleigh Witte of Cincinnati.
Freshman Kayla McMurry defeated Stephanie McLoughlin 6-2, 6-2 in a consolation round opener and advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-6, 6-2, (10-4) win over Tifanie Treece of Xavier.
Play resumes tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the doubles quarterfinals. Immediately after that, the doubles semifinals will be played. Consolation singles will be played simultaneously with the doubles matches. After a short break, the round of 16 for the main singles draw will be played at 1 p.m.
Results will be updated at the end of each round of matches on UTLadyVols.com. Complete draws, results and schedules will be available at the end of each day.
