KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team enjoyed a banner day on Saturday at the 2010 USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships at the Knoxville Racquet Club.
Both UT doubles teams still in the field advanced to the finals, while four players moved ahead to the singles quarterfinals.
"To get two teams in the finals is fantastic," Patrick said. "We're guaranteed a spot at the ITA National Indoors, which is great. It's important to have your program represented at national event like that. I'm looking forward to watching them compete tomorrow against some good competition, some of which is amongst ourselves."
Brynn Boren and Maria Sorbello began the day with an 8-1 win over Karina Kedzo and Kelly Holtzhausen of ETSU in the doubles quarterfinals. Rosalía Alda and Millie Nichols followed that up with an 8-5 win over Rebecca Shine and Sarah Miller of Louisville to put both squads in the semifinals.
Alda and Nichols fell behind Lauren Mira and Chelsea Preeg of Vanderbilt, 6-3, in their semifinal contest before mounting a furious comeback to take an 8-6 win.
15 minutes later, Boren and Sorbello guaranteed that it would be an all-Big Orange final by taking a hard fought 8-5 decision over Megan Broderick and Jessica Stiles of Kentucky.
This means that Sunday's doubles final will be a matchup of teammates with a trip to the 2010 USTA/ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championships--held in New York, N.Y. from Nov. 4-7-- on the line.
Patrick said that the match will provide an interesting change of pace for he and his wife, co-head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick.
"We're going to let them compete," Patrick said. "They know each other extremely well from playing in practice. It will be good for us (coaches) to sit back, relax and watch an entertaining doubles match."
In singles play, Sorbello was the first Lady Vol to advance, courtesy of a 6-1, 6-0 win over Louisville's Kaysara Mandry. Boren then followed her with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Rebecca Shine, also of Louisville.
Rosalía Alda reached the final eight with a 6-1, 7-5 decision against Kelly Holtzhausen of ETSU. Freshman Whitney Wofford defeated No. 5-8 seed Megan Broderick of Kentucky, 6-3, 6-4.
Boren will face top-seeded Jackie Wu of Vanderbilt in the quarters. Wu advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Katie Pleiman of Xavier. Sorbello takes on Vanderbilt's Lauren Mira, while Alda and Wofford face off in an intrasquad quarterfinal. The winners of those two matches will face off in the singles semifinals.
Play resumes tomorrow with the doubles final at 9 a.m. The singles quarterfinals will be played at 11 a.m., followed by the singles semifinals at 2 p.m.
Results will be posted at the conclusion of each match on UTLadyVols.com, while draws and schedules will be available at the end of the day.
