WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Sophomores Blakeley Griffith (Middlesburg, Va. / Loudoun County H.S.) and Victoria Jones (Tyne & Wear, U.K. / South Tyneside College) of the Lady Vol tennis team advanced to the second round of the Wilson ITA Regional Tournament with an 8-4 victory over Kristen Mears and Molly Molony of UNC Wilmington on Thursday.
"At the beginning, they were passive and started making too many unforced errors, but then picked it up at the end to win the match," Co-Head Coach Mike Patrick said. "It's a good way for them to start (the tournament)."
The duo faces Caroline Bentley and Mary Hagood of Furman in second-round action on Friday following the first and second rounds of singles action.
Jones, junior Sabita Maharaj (Gainesville, Fla. / Buchholz H.S.) and Griffith begin singles play on Friday. Jones faces Daniela Alverez of Clemson at 10:30 a.m. with the winner advancing to a second-round match to commence at 3 p.m. Maharaj, the sixth seed at the tournament, will compete with Renata Caceres of Winthrop at noon with the winner playing in the second round at 4 p.m. Griffith's first-round action begins at 1 p.m. versus Saras Arasu of Duke with the winner playing again at 4:30 p.m. Both singles and doubles brackets contain six rounds.
The singles finalists and the doubles champion will be invited to the prestigious ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which will be competed from Nov. 4-7 at Ann Arbor, Mich.
