WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely will represent the University of Tennessee women's tennis team when they square off in the finals of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regionals at the Basham Courts at the Schwartz Tennis Center on the campus of Purdue University.
"This tournament shows that we are one of the best in the region if not the best," said co-head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick. "To have an all Tennessee final in singles is remarkable and we know for sure we will at least have one Lady Vol will go to New York. That is exciting and it's been a great weekend."
Both athletes will also compete, this time together, in the doubles final of the tournament against No. 51 Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares of Vanderbilt marking the third year in a row that the Lady Vols find themselves in the doubles finals.
Boren and Szekely will play together Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. for the doubles championship followed by their match against each other for the singles championship at 10:45 a.m.
On Sunday, No. 18 ranked Boren defeated No. 124 Rebecca Shine of Louisville 6-4, 6-3 and No. 61 Lauren Mira of Vanderbilt 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 to earn her spot in the finals.
No. 28 Kata Szekely took down Courtney Colton of Vanderbilt 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 and No. 120 Julie Fellerhoff 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 in a couple of three set thrillers.
The duo started the day off with a doubles victory 8-1 over Lyn Yee Choo and Anna Gerbassi of ETSU to obtain their first spot in the finals.
"They are playing with a lot of confidence," said Patrick. "Going to All-American and doing well has boosted their confidence and they have become more familiar with each other. They are just playing well and they are trying to play to win that has been working well for them."
