WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - It was a University of Tennessee women's tennis sweep on the final day of action at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regionals at the Basham Courts at the Schwartz Tennis Center on the campus of Purdue University.
"They played with a lot of confidence in doubles," said co-head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick. It was also great thing that we had an all Tennessee final in singles and although we can only have one winner, it was about representing the university at this tournament and they did a fantastic job of that."
Junior Brynn Boren and senior Kata Szekely began the day earning the doubles championship, the third year in a row that the Lady Vols have captured the doubles title. It was the second for both Boren (who won previously with Maria Sorbello in 2010) and Szekely (who won last season partnered with Natalie Pluskota).
The Lady Vols dropped just one game in the finals earning the 6-0, 6-1 victory over No. 51 Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares of Vanderbilit.
The duo then split up to face each other in the singles finals as the No. 28 ranked Szekely defeated No. 18 ranked Boren 6-4, 6-2 in the final match of the tournament.
With the championship victories, Boren and Szekely earned an automatic bid into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Doubles Championships, while Szekely also earned the automatic singles bid. Boren will look forward to receiving an at-large spot.
"Any time you are able to rep the school in the national spotlight it is important," said Hahn-Patrick. "The girls have been exposed nationally and are now looking forward to doing well in the tournament."
Prior to the National Indoor Tournament, the Lady Vols will host the Tennessee Fall Invite Friday to Sunday, October 26-28 as Kentucky, Ohio State and NC State head to Knoxville.
