CINCINNATI - It was another perfect day at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Ohio Valley Regionals in Cincinnati, Ohio, for the University of Tennessee women's tennis team. The Lady Vols captured wins in all seven of their matches.
Starting off the day was Round of 16 doubles. Senior Zsófia Zubor and junior Rosalía Alda, the tournament's No.1 team, battled Natalie Araya and Marietta Bigus from Middle Tennessee State University in a tough match. In the end, however, the pair prevailed to a 7-6 victory. The Tennessee tandem will put its season's eight-match win streak on the line in Saturday's quarterfinal matchup against No. 8 Heather Steinbauer and Erica Robertson from Vanderbilt University.
Also securing a consecutive win was the tournament's No. 7-seeded pair of junior Maria Sorbello and freshman Kata Szekely. The duo finished quickly, rolling by the Evansville University team of Kate Chybowski and Theodora Kotsiou, with a score of 6-1. The UT combo now looks ahead to the second-seeded Caroline Lilly and Megan Broderick of the University of Kentucky.
Day two also saw the start of first-round main draw singles. Senior and tournament No. 1-seed, Caitlin Whoriskey drew MTSU's Taylor Coffey. The Blue Raider was no match for Whoriskey and went down in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-0. Purdue's Kate Chybowski, recently ousted from doubles by the Orange and White, stands as Whoriskey's next opponent.
After winning doubles, Alda took her stellar play into singles action. Facing Michelle Sammons from Purdue University, Alda lost only three games to the 13-seed in the tournament, winning 6-1, 6-2. Advancing to the second-round, she will face Evgeniya Verteshva of Indiana.
The Big Orange continued its winning ways in the afternoon. Eighth-seeded freshman, Kata Szekely took control of her match early, dropping two games en-route to a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Indiana's Megan Matter. Also fresh off a morning win, Zubor came back out to battle Anouk Faure from Eastern Kentucky. Faure was sent packing after being handed a 6-2, 6-2 defeat at the hands of Zubor.
Sorbello, the tournament's No. 4-seed, had a more difficult time versus Hendrieka Honibal of Miami University but still claimed the match win in three sets. After snagging the lead with a 6-2 first-set win, Honibal fought her way back in it, taking the second-set 4-6. In the end, however, it was Sorbello who had emerged the victor, winning the third-set and ultimately, the match with a 6-2 score.
