WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - The University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team concluded its fall tournament season on Sunday with two rounds of singles matches at the Wake Forest Invitational.
Tennessee began the day by taking on the Wolfpack of NC State in singles. NCSU swept matches at 1-5 singles, including a win by No. 55-ranked Sandhya Nagaraj over No. 119 Rosalía Alda of UT, 6-4, 6-2.
Millie Nichols, Whitney Wofford and Kata Szekely all lost in straight sets. Freshman Kayla McMurry battled Christy Sipes hard, but ultimately dropped a three-set contest, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.
From there, Tennessee took on Wake Forest in singles. Due to time constraints, only three matches were played. Martina Pavelec defeated Alda, 7-6 (2), 7-5.
Millie Nichols recorded Tennessee's only win of the day, toppling Kayla Duncan, 7-6 (1), 6-1.
Eventual tournament champion Kathryn Talbert of WF beat Whitney Wofford, 6-0, 6-1 to end the tournament for Tennessee.
A points system was used to determine an individual champion. A win at No. 1/2 singles or No. 1 doubles was worth three points. Wins at No. 3/4 singles and No. 2 doubles were worth two points and every other victory was worth one point.
Talbert's 16 points were enough to take home the crown. Nagaraj was second with 15 and Pavelec took third with 14 points. Millie Nichols was Tennessee's highest finisher with nine total points.
This wraps up Tennessee's fall tournament schedule. Overall, the Big Orange posted a 48-32 mark in singles play and a 22-10 mark in doubles play. UT will be off until Jan. 15, when it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., to compete in the Wolverine Invitational.
