NEW YORK -- Junior Brynn Boren put together a stellar start with a pair of wins at the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Thursday.
Boren ousted third-seeded Zoe Scandalis of Southern California 6-1, 6-2 in her opening singles match and also won 8-3 in doubles with Kata Szekely at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Competition started with doubles, and Boren and Szekely lived up to their No. 2 ranking. After falling behind early at 3-2, Boren and Szekely won six games in a row to beat Southern California's Danielle Lao and Valeria Pulido.
"I know both those girls from Southern Cal because I'm from Southern Cal," said Boren, a native of Laguna Niguel. "It was a little bit of a mental match for me, but Kata helped me get through it."
In both singles and doubles, Boren was facing friends on the other side of the net. The Lady Vol junior grew up in tennis-rich California as did her three opponents Thursday.
In the afternoon, Boren pulled ahead early in her singles match against third-seeded and seventh-ranked Scandalis and never looked back. It was Boren's second win this fall against a top-10 opponent.
"We grew up together playing juniors our whole lives pretty much, so we knew each other really well," Boren said. "We're good friends, but when you step on the court, you kind of have to put that behind you because it's just another opponent out there that you have to take on."
She faces Florida freshman Danielle Collins on Friday.
In doubles, Boren and Szekely play Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara in the quarterfinals. Szekely made the semifinals of the tournament last year with Natalie Pluskota.
Szekely also played a singles match Thursday, losing to Georgia State's Abigail Tere-Apisah 6-2, 7-5. The second set was a close one with service breaks in four games in a row before Apisah finally served it out.
