LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. - The five Lady Vol tennis players that competed at the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic Friday afternoon had a long day with multiple matches on day one of the tournament.
The Lady Vols, playing on clay for the first time this season, came out strong in the doubles match as Caitlyn Williams and Joanna Henderson defeated Stefanie Mikesz and Caroline Wagner of Memphis 9-7. Despite winning six games, Mimi Fotopoulos and Jesse Grace, playing together for the first time this season, fell in a tough 8-6 battle.
In singles, Fotopoulos battled to a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Maria Akvarez of Oklahoma State, earning a 7-6 victory in a set one that took nearly two hours to complete.
The rest of the Vols didn't fare as well as Grace, Henderson and Tiffany Tavares fell in their respective matches.
Williams and Henderson reconvened for the quarterfinals doubles match but fell to Carolina Hitimana and Olivia Janowicz of Florida 8-5.
In the consolation singles, Henderson and Tavares fell for a second time, while Jesse Grace moved on by default with a win over C.C. Sardinha of Oklahoma State. She will play Saturday.
Grace will be the only Lady Vol in action on Saturday on day two of the classic.
