KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - After winning her seventh consecutive doubles match and providing Tennessee's match-clinching point against No. 22 Tulsa, Sarah Toti was honored with the SEC's first Freshman of the Week award of the season, the conference announced Wednesday.
Last weekend, Toti played a role in four of UT's overall nine points as the Lady Vols pitched shutouts in their first two wins for just the fourth time in program history and evened their record at 2-2. The Las Vegas, Nev., native played a crucial role in defeating No. 58 UC Davis, 5-0, and No. 22 Tulsa, 4-0, as the Lady Vols advanced past the ITA Kick-Off into the National Team Indoor Championships for the third consecutive year.
Toti and sophomore Brynn Boren, ranked 18th in doubles, improved to 4-0 over the weekend with an 8-1 win over UC Davis and an 8-6 win over Tulsa. The latter result marked the third time in four matches that the tandem has clinched the doubles point for UT.
In singles, Toti won both of her matches, defeating Nicole Koehly (UC Davis) 6-0, 6-3 and Bonny Davidson (Tulsa) 6-4, 6-3, the first dual-match victories of her career.
Toti is the fifth Lady Vol in UT history to earn the honor. Boren was selected a UT-record three times last season, while senior Natalie Pluskota garnered the recognition twice as a rookie.
Overall, Toti is 8-5 in singles and 15-3 in doubles.
Tennessee returns to action this weekend hosting a pair of top-flight opponents at the Goodfriend Tennis Center. The Lady Vols face-off against No. 21 Notre Dame on Friday at 5 p.m., and No. 10 Michigan on Sunday at 10 a.m. Admission to both matches is free.
