KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The No. 22 University of Tennessee women's tennis team (3-1) will christen the home portion of its 2009 schedule this weekend, when the 29th-ranked University of Virginia (4-1) makes the trip to Rocky Top for a showdown at Noon on Sun., Feb. 8, at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
During his 21 seasons in Knoxville, UT Co-Head Coach Mike Patrick has amassed an amazing 20-1 record in home openers, including a 7-0 triumph over Middle Tennessee State last season, while fellow head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick's record in those matches is 10-1. The lone defeat for both was a 5-2 loss at the hands of North Carolina on Jan. 21, 2006.
The Lady Volunteers have already defeated the Cavaliers once this season, winning, 5-2, in the opening round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Qualifier in Coral Gables, Fla., on Jan. 31. With the win over UVa, Hahn-Patrick joined Patrick as the only 200 match winners in program history. Freshman Natalie Pluskota put forth another solid effort, earning her first career triumph over a ranked opponent, taking out No. 82 Emily Fraser at the No. 2 singles position.
Pluskota also joined forces with sophomore Jennifer Meredith to tally UT's only two doubles wins of the weekend. The tandem has now won 10 straight matches and has an overall record of 12-1 this season, including a perfect 4-0 mark in dual-match action. Following the win over Virginia, the Lady Vols dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 13 Miami on Sunday.
After opening the season with a ranking of No. 41 in the nation, the Cavaliers have jumped 12 spots in the ITA poll, moving up to No. 29. Virginia has a 4-1 record this year, defeating Old Dominion, then-No. 25 TCU, No. 47 Utah and No. 31 Ohio State.
UVa features a pair of ranked singles players in No. 42 Jennifer Stevens and No. 82 Emily Fraser. Stevens has amassed a 10-12 singles record this season, while Fraser holds a 17-6 mark. The two players also combine to form the No. 32-rated doubles team in the nation as well, with a record of 11-5 thus far into the 2008-09 campaign.

The Orange and White will have almost two weeks off from competitive action before returning to the courts on Fri., Feb. 20, when it welcomes Indiana to Rocky Top at 4 p.m. Just two days later, UT will take on Yale at Noon at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
