KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - While the University of Tennessee women's tennis team (5-2) climbed to No. 10, senior Zsófia Zubor and juniors Rosalía Alda and Maria Sorbello made the most impressive leaps in the newest edition of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association tennis polls.
Not only does UT have the nation's top-ranked doubles team in senior Caitlin Whoriskey and sophomore Natalie Pluskota, it also sports the 20th-rated team, as well. The combo of Alda and Zubor entered with a season record of 16-4, two wins coming over nationally ranked opponents.
Alda and Zubor are currently on a two-match win streak and have collected a 5-1 mark in dual-play. This is the second year they have combined to fill the No. 2 roster spot, after going 9-7 together during the 2008-09 season. The duo is also No. 3 in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional ratings.
Sorbello also made a big jump, rising to career-best No. 38 in the ITA singles poll. Previously 58th, the Australia native made the move after a match-clinching victory over then-No. 31 Catherine Newman from Vanderbilt, 6-1, 6-4. She then followed with a, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, win over Northwestern's Samantha Murray, who was 48th-ranked at the time. Sorbello grabbed Tennessee's only singles triumph in its 5-2 loss to the Wildcats in round one of the ITA National Team Indoors. Overall, she is 14-6 on the season, with a 4-3 dual-match record.
Whoriskey dropped one spot in the singles list to No. 7, despite beating top-ranked Irina Falconi from Georgia Tech at the Team Indoors.
Full ITA rankings can be found at www.itatennis.com. Team standings will be released again on Feb. 23, while updated singles and doubles lists will not appear again until March 2.
The Big Orange hits the road again this weekend to battle a pair of Big Ten foes, beginning with a noon contest at No. 28 Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, Feb. 20. The next day, the Lady Vols face 45th-ranked Indiana at 11 a.m. in Bloomington, Ind.
