KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - In the first computer-generated rankings of the 2010 season, the University of Tennessee women's tennis team (6-4) jumped two spots to No. 11 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll released Tuesday afternoon.
Individually, senior Caitlin Whoriskey, previously ranked seventh, fell three spots to No. 10 despite winning four of her last five singles contests, three of which came against top-67 opponents. Junior teammate Maria Sorbello also slid in the latest ratings to the No. 47 slot.
Whoriskey's name, however, is still at the top of the doubles poll alongside her partner, sophomore Natalie Pluskota. While the two Lady Vols have not joined forces in the last three competitions, they still hold a perfect 7-0 mark in dual-match play and a spectacular overall season record of 19-1.
Junior Rosalía Alda and senior Zsófia Zubor form the 33rd-best combo in the country. The duo, which won its contest at Notre Dame this past weekend, has compiled the second-best dual and overall records on the team at 7-2 and 18-5 respectively.
The Orange and White squad will return home for the first time in over a month this weekend to commence Southeastern Conference play by hosting No. 36 Auburn and No. 50 Alabama in the Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tenn. First serve against the Tigers is set for 4 p.m. on Friday, March 5, while the contest versus the Crimson Tide will start at 1 p.m. two days later.
New ITA Ohio Valley Regional rankings will be released this Thursday, March 4. Currently, UT has three doubles teams within the top-five, and four individuals found amongst the region's top-15.
