KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee Lady Vol tennis player Caitlyn Williams has been named SEC Freshman of the Week, marking the first such honor in her career and the fourth by a Lady Vol this season, the conference announced Wednesday.
Williams, a Knoxville native, provided UT's match-clinching 6-4, 6-4 victory against South Carolina's Dominika Kanakova on Sunday, lifting the Lady Vols to a 4-3 win over the Gamecocks.
"Caitlyn has done a great job of being able to compete on the weekends without that much preparation," co-head coach Mike Patrick said of the freshman, who is still recovering from shoulder surgery in 2011. "It just says a lot about her mental game and her toughness to be able to pull out matches like that. I hope it continues throughout the rest of the season."
For Tennessee, it marked its first SEC win and 10th overall (10-4, 1-1).
For Williams, it marked the fourth consecutive UT win in which she's provided the match-clinching point for the Lady Vols, but the first time where her match was the last completed.
A winner of five of her last six singles matches, Williams also teamed with senior Natalie Pluskota to help UT secure the doubles point against South Carolina. The ninth-ranked tandem in the country was the first to finish Sunday, defeating Kanakova and Anya Morgina, 8-2. It was the seventh doubles win by at least six points for the duo, which has knocked off a pair of top five opponents.
Overall, Williams is 8-4 overall in singles and 8-7 in doubles.
Williams and the Lady Vols return to action this weekend, facing No. 25 Ole Miss on Friday at 4 p.m. and Mississippi State at 2 p.m. on Sunday at 2 p.m.
