March 13, 2013

BIRMINGHAM - For the first time in her Tennessee career, junior Brynn Boren has been tabbed the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week after going undefeated against Mississippi State and Ole Miss this past weekend.

Boren, who earned Freshman of the Week honors three times in 2011, helped the Lady Vols to a perfect 2-0 weekend closing out their five match home stand with a 4-1 record.

This is the second SEC Player of the Week honor for the Lady Vols this season as Kata Szekely earned the honor for the week of February 20.

The last time two different Lady Vols earned Player of the Week honors came in 2010 when Maria Sorbello and Caitlin Whoriskey achieved the feat.

Boren did not lose a single doubles game on the weekend as she and partner Kata Szkeley, who form the No. 4 doubles team in the nation, defeated their opponents at No. 1 doubles 8-0, 8-0 consecutively earning the first win of the match on both days.

Against Mississippi State, Boren battled against Georgiana Patrasc to secure the final point of the night and the sweep of Mississippi State. She came back in the third set to earn an 11-9 third set tiebreaker victory and help the Lady Vols to their fourth straight sweep, and ninth straight victory, of the Bulldogs.

On Sunday, Boren took down Ole Miss' only ranked player in No. 39 Caroline Rhode-Moe 7-6 (5), 6-4 securing the game-winning point for the Lady Vols.

With her two singles victories, she improved to 3-0 in SEC play.

Boren and the Lady Vols will head out on their first SEC road trip of the season when they travel to face No. 32 South Carolina and No. 4 Florida this weekend. Tennessee will face the Gamecocks on Friday at 5 p.m. followed by a Sunday afternoon meeting with the Gators at 1 p.m.
