KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee Lady Vol tennis player Joanna Henderson has been named SEC Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. Henderson is the third Lady Vol to win the award this season, making UT just the second school to have three student-athletes win the award in one season.
Henderson's accolade also marks the fifth overall time a Lady Vol has earned SEC Freshman of the Week in 2012, as Sarah Toti won it the first three weeks of the season and Caitlyn Williams was honored last Wednesday.
Henderson swept through doubles competition over the weekend, teaming with Kata Szekely to improve to 11-2 in dual-match play. The only UT duo to win Friday at Ole Miss, Henderson and Szekely's 8-2 win was their ninth by at least five points.
The tandem followed it up with an 8-5 decision over Mississippi State's Naomi Tran and Ekaterina Iakovleva on Sunday from the No. 2 position.
In singles, Henderson defeated Mississippi State's Petra Ferancova 6-4, 7-6 (4) to help Tennessee tally its fifth shutout of the season, 7-0, while improving to 3-0 in tiebreakers this season.
For Tennessee, it marked its second SEC win and 11th overall (11-5, 2-2).
Overall, Henderson is 9-9 overall in singles and 14-6 in doubles.
Henderson is the seventh Lady Vol to win the honor in UT history.
Henderson and the Lady Vols have this weekend off and will wrap up their non-conference slate next Wednesday, March 21, at UNLV. The first serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
