KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis player Millie Nichols was named the Southeastern Conference freshman of the week, the league office announced on Wednesday morning.
A native of Austin, Texas, Nichols helped UT sweep a pair of SEC foes last weekend, defeating Kentucky, 6-1, on Friday before toppling No. 8-ranked Vanderbilt, 5-2, on Sunday.
Against the Wildcats, Nichols teamed up with junior Natalie Pluskota to knock off UK's No. 1 doubles team of Megan Broderick and Khristina Blajkevitch, 8-2. In singles, Nichols took down CeCe Witten, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot in the lineup.
Nichols was the first Lady Vol to record a singles victory against Vanderbilt, topping Keilly Ulery, 6-4, 6-2. Her victory got the momentum rolling in UT's direction and helped propel Tennessee to a big victory against the nation's eighth-ranked squad.
On the season, Nichols is tied for second on the team with 18 singles victories. Her 20 doubles victories rank second on the squad as well.
18th-ranked Tennessee (9-3, 3-0) is in action this weekend, taking on No. 17 Notre Dame at 10 a.m. Saturday in Tampa, Fla.
Results from that match will be posted shortly after the end of competition on UTLadyVols.com.
