KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The No. 13 University of Tennessee women's tennis team (10-3, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) will jump back into league play this weekend after a 12-day hiatus, as it is slated to travel to Fayetteville on Friday, March 27 for a 1 p.m. ET contest against No. 23 Arkansas before returning to Rocky Top for a Noon showdown with 21st-ranked LSU just two days later at the Goodfriend Tennis Center. Live scoring for both matches will be available at www.UTLadyVols.com.
The Lady Vols split a pair of contests this past weekend, opening with a 7-0 sweep over UCF in Orlando on Friday before returning to Knoxville where it dropped a hard-fought 5-2 decision to No. 2 Notre Dame on Sunday.
In singles action, senior Samantha Orlin and sophomore Jennifer Meredith led the way, scoring a pair of wins each. In a return to her home state of Florida, Orlin tallied a 6-4, 6-2, triumph over Andrea Yacaman to close out the sweep over the Knights after Meredith picked up a near perfect, 6-1, 6-0, win over Alexis Rodriguez. Just two days later, the duo accounted for both of the Orange and White's points against the second-rated Fighting Irish, defeating Kristen Rafael and Shannon Mathews by scores of 6-1, 7-5, and 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, respectively.
For the season, a trio of Lady Vols are tied for the team lead in singles wins with 19 each. Orlin and junior Zsófia Zubor both have records of 19-7, while Meredith is 19-9 on the year. Orlin also tops the team with 11 wins in dual-match play with Zubor and Meredith coming in a close second with 10 victories each. Junior Caitlin Whoriskey, meanwhile, has more triumphs over ranked opponents than any other Lady Vol with six, propelling her to a No. 48 national ranking.
The East Sandwich, Mass., native has also been impressive in doubles play, accumulating a 17-10 record while playing with three different partners. She is part of two nationally-rated doubles pairings as she teams up with Pluskota to form the 32nd-rated duo and with sophomore Maria Sorbello to create the No. 59-ranked tandem. Whoriskey and Pluskota have only been paired together since Feb. 8, but have put together a 6-2 record, including three wins over ranked opposition.
The Orange and White will hit the road next weekend as well, as it will travel to the Yellowhammer State to take on SEC Western Division foes No. 17 Alabama and Auburn. UT will square off with the Crimson Tide at 4 p.m. ET in Tuscaloosa on Friday, April 3, before making a quick jaunt to Auburn to face the 31st-ranked Tigers.
