KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis player Brynn Boren was named the Southeastern Conference's freshman of the week, the league announced on Monday morning.
Boren's straight-set victory over No. 111 Alex Anghelescu of Georgia helped lead the Lady Vols to a 5-2 win over the eighth-ranked Bulldogs, clinching the second seed in the SEC Women's Tennis Tournament for the Big Orange.
She also teamed up with Natalie Pluskota to topple the nation's No. 11-ranked doubles duo of Chelsey Gullickson and Kate Fuller, 8-4, helping UT capture the doubles point for the 19th time in 23 matches this season.
This marks the third time that Boren has received this award during the 2010-11 season, tying her with Alex Cercone of Florida for the most in the league.
For the year, Boren's 26 singles victories rank second on the team. She has posted a 6-3 mark against top-100 foes and a 5-3 record in SEC play.
In doubles, Boren is 15-5, including a 7-0 record in dual match action. She and Pluskota comprise the nation's No. 38-rated duo and have recorded seven consecutive victories.
Tennessee is back in action this week as it hosts the 2011 SEC Women's Tennis Tournament. First round action begins Thursday at 9 a.m. UT will play at 6 p.m. Friday, taking on the winner of an opening round matchup between 10th-seeded Kentucky and No. 7 seed LSU.
