ATHENS, Ga. - Three Lady Vols have been included in the draws for the Division I Women's Tennis Individual Championships released by the NCAA Tuesday afternoon. Senior Blakeley Griffith will participate in the singles portion of the event while freshmen Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsófia Zubor will compete in doubles action. Play will begin Wednesday, May 23, at 9 a.m. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., with singles and will culminate with the singles and doubles championship matches on May 28.
The tournament will mark the final competition in Orange and White for Griffith, the nation's 21st-ranked player, who will conclude a spectacular four-year career at Tennessee. During her senior campaign, the Middleburg, Va., native has put together a solid 25-15 overall singles record, including 10 wins over nationally-ranked opponents.
She will open play with a first-round match up against No. 28 Shadisha Robinson of South Florida at 1 p.m. on May 23. Robinson has seen action at both the first and second spots in the lineup for the Bulls this season, amassing a 25-14 overall record. She picked up a center-court victory over Florida International's Paula Zabala in the first round of the NCAA Team Championships before USF bowed out to Florida in the next round.
Griffith currently sits in a tie for 11th on the school's all-time singles win chart with a career record of 93-60 (.608). A win over Robinson would vault her past Debbie Moringiello (93-50, .650) into the school's top 10.
In the doubles draw, the Tennessee tandem of Whoriskey and Zubor, rated 28th in the country, will take on the 35th-ranked Fresno State duo of Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe. The UT pairing first joined forces against then-No. 2 Notre Dame on March 16. Since that point, the two freshmen have notched a record of 7-3, including a pair of triumphs over squads ranked No. 5 and No. 10 in the nation. They also solidified the No. 1 position in the doubles lineup for Tennessee, going 5-2 on the year.
For Fresno State, sophomores Gloria and Rowe helped lead their team to a berth in the Round of 16 in the NCAA Team Championships with a 13-4 record this year. Doubles proved to be one of the strongest parts of the Bulldogs' game as they claimed the doubles point in their last nine contests before their season ended with a 4-2 loss to NCAA Finalist Georgia Tech.
