BROWNSVILLE, Texas - University of Tennessee rising senior Caitlin Whoriskey put forth another strong showing at a United States Tennis Association Pro Circuit Event this past week, downing the top singles seed at the Brownsville Women's $10,000 Tournament in Texas. The Lady Vol All-American advanced through the qualifying singles draw with a pair of victories before falling in the second round of the main draw, in addition to reaching the quarterfinals of the doubles portion of the tournament.
Whoriskey's summer has been quite eventful thus far, as she paired up with UT rising sophomore Natalie Pluskota to reach the finals of the doubles draw at the Hilton Head Pro Circuit Tournament on June 6. She also advanced to the quarterfinals of the main singles draw in that same tournament and was named to the prestigious 12-player USTA Summer Collegiate Team on June 12.
This past week, Whoriskey traveled to the Lone Star State to compete in her second USTA event of the summer in Brownsville. It looked as if her stay would be short-lived, however, as she fell behind by a set in her opening match of the tournament. The 5-8 right-hander quickly found her rhythm though, coming from behind to defeat Danielle Lao, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the first round of the singles qualifying draw. Whoriskey then followed up that performance with a solid, 6-1, 6-2, triumph over Stephanie Vidov to claim a spot in the main singles draw.
Although she earned the toughest assignment, drawing the tournament's No. 1 seed, Vivian Segnini from Brazil, Whoriskey was able to continue her run in the tournament with a dominating, 6-1, 6-4, victory, before falling to Brittany Augustine, 6-2, 1-6, 5-7, in the second round.
Whoriskey also competed in the main doubles draw, pairing up with former Vanderbilt foe Taka Bertrand to reach the quarterfinals. The duo opened the competition with a convincing, 6-4, 6-1, triumph over the fourth-seeded team of Kaitlyn Christian and New Zealand native and Arizona graduate Dianne Hollands. Whoriskey and Bertrand then defeated the teenage tandem of Breaunna Addison and Chanelle Van Nguyen, 6-4, 6-2, before falling by an identical score to Ester Goldfeld and TCU alum Macall Harkins in the quarterfinals.
Whoriskey will next be in action this week when she makes a trip to the Sunflower State for a $10,000 USTA Tournament stop in Wichita, Kansas. Later this summer, she will also take part in a USTA Pro Tour Transition camp, July 6-9, in Atlanta, Ga., as a member of the USTA Summer Collegiate Team.
