NORCROSS, Ga. -- Former All-American Natalie Pluskota won the mixed doubles title at the USTA Southern's U.S, Open National Playoffs.
Pluskota teamed up with former Alabama star Ricky Doverspike to capture the regional title. They defeated Marcus Hurtig and Abigail Tere-Apisah 7-6 (1), 3-6, [11-9] in the championship match on Saturday.
With the victory, Pluskota and Doverspike advance to the U.S. Open National Playoffs, which will be held Aug. 20-23 in New Haven, Conn. The tournament will include the champions from the 13 USTA regional sections, and the winner earns a wild card to the mixed doubles event at the U.S. Open.
Pluskota is looking for to make her first appearance in an Grand Slam event.
Pluskota will join a former teammate in New Haven. Caitlin Whoriskey won the singles title at the New England sectional qualifier earlier this month. She will be in contention for a singles qualifying wild card.
