KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - University of Tennessee women's tennis players Rosalía Alda and Maria Sorbello will start the season ranked among the best doubles tandems in the nation. The senior duo stands at No. 11 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason doubles rankings, which were announced Friday afternoon.
Last season, Alda set a career high with 29 doubles wins while Sorbello's 31 victories matched her previous best. Each also earned a spot on the All-SEC second team as they helped propel the Orange and White to its deepest postseason run in eight seasons.
The two haven't teamed up in doubles competition since the 2008-09 season, when they posted a 6-4 combined record. However, both players have plenty of doubles experience. Alda enters the year with 82 career doubles wins, the 13th-most in school history. Sorbello's 62-19 doubles record gives her a prolific winning percentage of .765.
Sorbello, a native of Mackay, Australia, also came in at No. 35 in the initial 2010-11 Campbell's/ITA singles rankings. She enjoyed the best season of her career last year, finishing at No. 53 in the final singles poll while also racking up a career-high 23 victories, playing primarily from the No. 2 spot in the lineup.
Alda also earned a nod in the singles rankings, slating at No. 119. The 5-11 senior from Round Rock, Texas notched a personal-best total of 23 singles wins.
The Lady Vol tennis team is competing this weekend at the 2010 SEC Fall Coaches' Classic in Auburn, Ala. Results will be available on UTLadyVols.com shortly after the competition.
