KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - EdAmerica President and CEO Tony Hollin honored a pair of Lady Vol student-athletes, senior tennis player Victoria Jones and junior golfer Marci Turner, for their service in athletics and academics, respectively. The two were presented trophies for their accomplishments at halftime of the Tennessee-Florida football game Saturday night at Neyland Stadium.
Jones was awarded the 2005-06 EdAmerica All-Star Athlete of the Year while Turner earned EdAmerica Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors. Student-athletes were judged on their athletic and scholastic achievements as well as their participation in on-campus activities and groups.
During her junior campaign on the tennis courts, Jones finished with a 14-21 overall record, primarily playing in the No. 1 singles position for the Lady Vols. On Jan. 29, the biochemistry and molecular biology major earned the biggest win of her career at Rocky Top, topping No. 29 Hala Sufi of Purdue, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. She concluded the weekend with a perfect 4-0 record and was named SEC Player of the Week for her performance. In doubles play, she teamed with fellow classmate Blakely Griffith to post a team-best 14-11 record for the year.
Turner, who is majoring in Turfgrass Management, is a two-time Academic All-American and an All-SEC Academic team selection. On the course, Turner garnered a second-team National Golf Coaches Association All-American award and Golfweek National Player of the Week three times during her sophomore year. The Tompkinsville, Ky., native won three individual titles last season to help her team to three tournament titles including the NCAA East Regional Tournament.
