Furman Classic Draws SheetGREENVILLE, S.C. – Four members of the University of Tennessee women’s tennis team advanced to the semifinal rounds of their respective singles flights, while senior Ghizela Schutte and freshman Rosalía Alda combined to claim a pair of doubles victories and move on to the flight three championship on the first day of play at the Furman Fall Classic at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The tournament opened at 9 a.m. with the initial round of doubles. In the first flight, the nation’s 10th-ranked duo of sophomores Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsófia Zubor got the ball rolling for the Orange and White, defeating Southeastern Conference-rival Vanderbilt’s pairing of Amanda Taylor and Courtney Ulery, ranked No. 21, by a score of 8-6. The UT duo was unable to move past the semifinals, however, dropping an 8-3 decision to the No. 23-ranked Gira Schofield and Ana Marija Zubori of South Carolina.
In the second flight, sophomore Connor Vogel and freshman Jennifer Meredith also went 1-1 on the day, falling 8-2 to Clemson’s No. 32-ranked combo of Carol Salge and Estafania Balde, before reversing course and handing a loss to Leyla Morzan and Lauren McCarthy of Penn State by an identical score.
Alda and Schutte represented the Big Orange in the third flight of play, advancing to the championship match with a pair of hard-fought triumphs. In its first match, the duo was taken to a tie-breaker by Carolina Ferrell and Keilly Ulery of Vanderbilt, before emerging victorious, 9-8 (7-4). Another tight contest ensued in the semifinal round, but the UT pairing was able to battle for an 8-6 victory over Megan McGavock and Miljana Jocic of South Carolina.
Singles play was also good to Tennessee, as four Lady Vols were able to bring home wins in the initial round of action. Whoriskey was the first to finish, cruising past Ina Hadziselimovik of Clemson, 6-1, 6-1, in flight two, before Zubor took out Penn State’s Denisa Zobeideh, 6-2, 6-0, in the fourth flight.
Junior Samantha Orlin and Alda were also victorious in flights six and seven, respectively. Orlin made quick work of her opponent, Linzee Malorey of North Carolina, downing the Tar Heel, 6-3, 6-4, while Alda swept past Wisconsin’s Elizabeth Dolan, 6-2, 6-3.
Also in action for UT were Vogel, Schutte and Meredith. In flight one, Vogel fell, 6-3, 6-2, to No. 82 Laura Gioia of Furman, while Schutte was defeated, 6-4, 6-4 by Clemson’s Laurianne Henry in the third flight. Despite putting up a solid effort against her fifth-flight opponent, Alexandra Luc also of Clemson, Meredith was unable to pull out the victory. The Marietta, Ga., won the initial frame, 6-2, before Luc squeezed out a 7-6 (8-6) win in the second set and a 6-1 triumph in the third.
