KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Senior Caitlin Whoriskey and sophomore Natalie Pluskota's doubles title at the Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Tournament earned the pair Lady Vol Athlete of the Week accolades on Monday.
The Tennessee tandem, ranked seventh in the nation and undefeated this season, kicked off itssweep of the ITA All-American by defeating the No. 15-rated Notre Dame combo of Kristy Frilling and Kali Krisik, 8-2 earning the opportunity to take on the country's second-ranked team in the quarterfinals. Facing Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette from Stanford in a rematch of last years' semifinal loss at the NCAA Doubles Championships, the Lady Vols came out on top, 8-4.
Their run didn't get any easier, as Whoriskey and Pluskota faced yet another ranked opponent in semifinal action. This time it was Baylor's eighth-ranked team of Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi standing in the way. Once again, however, the Big Orange won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
In the finals, the Lady Vol pair needed a three-set comeback to defeat Florida's Lauren Embree and Allie Will. After dropping the first-set, 3-6, to the Gators, the Tennessee combo rolled through the next two sets, 6-1, 6-0 to win the match and the doubles crown. This marked the first national championship for Whoriskey and Pluskota, although Whoriskey previously won the ITA All-American doubles title in 2007 with fellow classmate Zsófia Zubor.
The women's tennis team has the week off to prepare before heading to Cincinnati, Ohio, to compete in the ITA Ohio Valley Region Championships, Oct. 21-26.
