KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team will play host to the 2010 USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships this week at the Knoxville Racquet Club. Play begins Wednesday morning with qualifying singles and doubles.

17 teams will have at least one player competing in the tournament, highlighted by SEC rivals Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt's Jackie Wu (No. 25) is the highest-ranked player in the singles field, followed by UT senior Maria Sorbello (No. 35). Also ranked are Vanderbilt's Chelsea Preeg (No. 58) and Tennessee's Rosalía Alda.

Alda just competed in the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, where she went 1-2, defeating No. 19 Alison Ramos of Southern California. Sorbello will also be in action for the first time this fall and has earned the No. 2 overall seed in the singles draw.

Other teams in the field include Butler, Chattanooga, Cincinnati, ETSU, Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, IUPUI, Kentucky, Louisville, MTSU, Memphis, Miami (Ohio), Murray State, Wright State and Xavier.

Play commences at 8 a.m. Wednesday with qualifying doubles matches. Qualifying singles play begins at 11 a.m. Four doubles teams and eight individuals will advance to the main draws, which start on Thursday.

Thursday will consist of the first round of both singles and doubles. Friday's action will involve the doubles round of 16, the singles round of 32 as well as a consolation singles round of 32. Saturday will see both the doubles quarter and semifinals and the singles round of 16.

The doubles championship will be decided on Sunday, while singles play continues with the quarterfinals, semifinals and a consolation round.

Everything will wrap up Monday morning with the singles finals.

Players will be competing this weekend for the right to advance to the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held from Nov. 4-7 at the USTA-Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Winners from both the main singles and doubles draws will earn a berth.
