KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - For the second time in a month, senior Blakeley Griffith has been named Lady Vol Athlete of the Week, as determined by a unanimous vote of the Lady Vol media relations staff. The Middleburg, Va., native competed at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Columbus, Ohio, last weekend.
In the opening round of the tournament, Griffith defeated the highest-ranked opponent of her career, downing No. 5 Zsuzsanna Fodor of California in dominating fashion, 6-1, 6-2. With the victory, she advanced to the Round of 16 where she fell to No. 2 Kristi Miller of Georgia Tech by the same score.
Griffith concludes the fall season with a 12-2 record, including wins in seven of her last eight matches. So far this year, she has defeated four players recognized in the preseason ITA rankings.
The Big Orange will take the next two months off from competitive action before returning to the courts Jan. 19-21 for the Virginia Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. The Lady Vols will open up the dual-match portion of their slate at 4 p.m. on Jan. 23 in Chapel Hill, N.C., against the University of North Carolina.
