KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee women's tennis team closed out the fall portion of its schedule Sunday by winning four matches on the final day at the St. Mary's Tournament at the UT Varsity Courts in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Lady Vols began the day with a round of doubles against teams from Wake Forest University. Senior Zsófia Zubor and junior Rosalía Alda paired together in hopes for their second win of the tournament. The Tennessee tandem matched up against Wake's Sasha Kulikova and Emilee Malvehy in a contest that had to be decided in extra games.
Zubor and Alda saw their 3-0 lead go just as quickly as it came as Wake came charging back to take a 4-3 advantage. From there, the contest was a back-and-forth affair before it eventually settled into a 7-7 tie. The Lady Vols broke the Deacons serve to move into the lead and then didn't drop a point the rest of the way en route to a 9-7 match victory.
For the third straight day, junior Maria Sorbello combined with Middle Tennessee State's Yuiri Nomoto. The two battled Martina Pavalec and Katarina Reveche in a match that saw Sorbello and Nomoto have to come from behind. In the end, however, the comeback fell just short as Pavalec and Reveche claimed the win, 8-6.
The Orange and White returned for singles in the afternoon. Zubor won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, over East Tennessee State's Kelly Hotzhausen, while Sorbello and Alda would need three frames before they came away victorious.
Sorbello dropped her first set to Yevgeniya Stupak from ETSU, 4-6. The Mackay, Australia, native would not go away without a fight, however, claiming the second frame, 6-3, to force the match into a deciding third set. Stupak faltered late in the third, allowing Sorbello to make her move for the 7-5 win.
Alda lost her first set as well to Buccaneer Paula Jaime, by a score of 6-7 (4-0). The 5-11 junior bounced back to pick up a 7-5 win in set two, before carrying that momentum over for an easy, 6-2, triumph in the third for her second win of the tournament.
With the conclusion of Alda's match, the women's tennis team closed out its fall schedule. The Lady Vols will return to action on Jan. 16, 2010 at the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.
