KNOXVILLE, Tenn.

Junior sprinter Toyin Olupona had the best opening night of her career and the pole vault crew charted three personal-best marks to highlight the University of Tennessee women's track & field team's performance at the Tennessee All-Comers Meet Friday night at Stokely Athletics Center.

Although the field was a small one, Olupona made her 2004 debut the most productive in her three seasons at UT by rolling to a 6.98 reading to easily win heat one of the 55-meter dash. In the finals, the Orillia, Canada, product wasn't able to match that time, but her 7.04 output was speedy enough to earn her third career victory in the short sprint. Olupona's previous 55m best in an opening race was 7.05 at the 2002 Tennessee All-Comers.

In the pole vault competition, junior Kendra Rhyne (Andersonville, Tenn.) nabbed her initial collegiate victory by clearing an indoor and outdoor career-best height of 11-11.75/3.65m. Junior Jamie Rebella (Merrill, Wis.) and sophomore Jessica Reust (Knoxville, Tenn.) each sailed over 11-5.75/3.50m to tie for second and register their best-ever indoor marks, while sophomore Jessica Andrews (Rockford, Tenn.) navigated the bar at 10-6 to place fourth.

"It was a fun home meet and a chance to get some anxiety out," second-year Lady Vol Head Coach J.J. Clark said. "The pole vaulters produced three personal records and showed some potential for scoring in the future, and Toyin demonstrated that she will definitely be a factor in the Southeastern Conference.

"In the finals, she had some flaws that we still have to work out, but it was a positive first run for her tonight. Overall, we're still developing in some of the other areas, but I look forward to seeing our continued progress."

Other noteworthy personal bests on the evening came from sophomore Lindsey McFarland (Austin, Texas), who won the weight throw competition with a heave of 42-1.50/12.84m, and second-year multi-eventer Caitlin Ward (Gibsonia, Pa.)l, who walked away with a win in the high jump with a leap of 5-1.75/1.57m. Also claiming victories in the 2004 lid-lifter were sophomore Sara Vigil (Tucson, Ariz.), a transfer from Central Arizona who won the shot put in her first meet as a Lady Vol at 42-0.75/12.82m, and junior Nicole Cook (Petersburg, Va.), who coasted to the 400-meter title in 59.41.

In the final event of the evening, while running unattached, Tammy King-Foster raced to a Stokely-record time of 2:11.79 to win the 800 meters. She broke the old mark of former Lady Vol Maureen Ferris, a 2:16.24 performance on Feb. 20, 1998.

Clark's Tennessee squad will not return to action until Jan. 25, when it travels to Gainesville, Fla., to compete in the SEC Invitational at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
