LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Tennessee track & field teams shifted into high gear on the second day of the Kentucky Invitational, registering five victories, four of them from freshmen, and an NCAA automatic-qualifying performance Saturday at Nutter Field House.

Fresh from a fantastic season on the gridiron for the Vols, Justin Hunter punched his ticket to the NCAA Indoor Championship meet and claimed a win in his inaugural college competition. The Vol rookie soared to a lifetime-best measurement of 26 feet, one inch in the long jump, earning a trip to College Station, Texas, for the national meet on March 11-12. That mark ranks him third-best all-time at UT behind Darius Pemberton (26-5 1/2) and Jason Grimes (26-4) after only one meet.

Dentarius Locke made his redshirt year in 2010 worth the wait, debuting in orange with victories in the men's 60- and 200-meter dashes. He crossed the line first in career-best times of 6.75 and 21.15, respectively. True freshman Jarael Nelvis was second in the 200m in 21.33 and fifth in the 60m at 6.86. Locke and Nelvis established themselves as the No. 6 and No. 11 all-time Vol 200m performers in the process. Locke is tied for 12th in the 60m.

Lady Vol senior Jackie Areson narrowly missed securing an NCAA automatic time in the women's 3000 meters, covering the distance in 9:14.61 to seize the victory. Areson, who broke the school record in that event last season, was just shy of the 9:13.00 national qualifying mark. Princeton transfer Liz Costello wasn't far off either, impressively taking second in 9:16.91 to give the UT women another likely contributor in the distances.

Rookie Kianna Ruff led a one-two-four Lady Vol finish in the women's 800 meters. The freshman covered the distance in 2:10.99, followed closely by Seton Hall transfer Nijgia Snapp in second (2:10.91) and another freshman, Brittney Jackson, in fourth (2:13.54). Vol Joe Franklin carded a top-three outcome of his own in the men's 800m, taking third in 1:51.61.

Elsewhere, junior Chanelle Price grabbed third in the women's mile in 4:47.49, junior Varick Tucker snared third in the men's 400m in 47.64, the Lady Vol 4x400m relay unit took third in 3:41.01 and the Vols' 4x4 wound up fourth in 3:15.04. Carrying the baton for the UT women were junior Ellen Wortham, Price, sophomore Martinique Octave and Ruff, while the men's combo included Tucker, Franklin, Nelvis and Locke.
