LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Tennessee's Alicia Essex began her senior season in fine fashion Friday night, soaring to victory in the pole vault with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark at the Kentucky Invitational at Nutter Field House.
The Purcellville, Va., native got the fourth-ranked Lady Vol track & field team off to a flying start in its 2009 campaign, winning the vault by four inches over runner-up Julianne Toto of Georgia. Essex's clearance of 12 feet, 11 1/2 inches was good enough for her first career indoor victory and gave UT its initial national "B" standard qualifier of the new year. It also ranks as her number-two all-time effort, right behind her runner-up performance of 12-11 3/4 at the 2008 Tyson Invitational.
In the weight throw, three Lady Vols inexperienced in that event stepped into the ring. None posted a top 10 outcome, but all left with personal-best marks. Sophomore Annie Alexander (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) was the Big Orange's highest finisher, carding a heave of 50-4 to place 14th. Freshman Laquoya Kelly (Nashville, Tenn.) was 19th at 47-3 3/4, while sophomore Holly Kane (Knoxville, Tenn.) came in 32nd at 40-0 3/4.
Alexander was scheduled to compete in the indoor discus competition late Friday night, but results of that exhibition event were not available at press time. That information will be included in Tennessee's Saturday night wrap-up.
The Lady Vols return to Nutter Field House for a full day of action on Saturday against a 17-team field that includes ranked foes such as No. 13 Florida, No. 16 South Carolina, No. 20 Miami (Fla.), No. 22 Kentucky and No. 25 Louisville. Field event action begins at 10:30 a.m., while track events are slated to commence at 12:30 p.m.
