UT's Law Clocks Provisional Time in 60m Hurdles at Penn State

Jan. 30, 2009

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The second-ranked Tennessee women's track & field team got solid performances from several competitors Friday, including an NCAA provisional and a pair of top-five finishes, on the first day of the Penn State National Invitational at Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.

In the 60-meter hurdles, senior Celriece Law (Denver, Colo.) posted the fastest time this early in the season in her career, navigating the obstacles in 8.30 seconds during the semifinal round to meet the NCAA provisional standard. In Law's third race of the day, the final, she dipped below the provisional standard again but did not have an improvement. Her 8.34 effort was good for sixth place against a very strong field. She now owns the second-fastest time in the SEC thus far in 2009 with that readout in the semis.

Lynne Layne also made the final in the 60m dash. After posting readouts of 7.48 and 7.50 in the first two rounds, the junior from New Rochelle, N.Y., lowered her time to 7.46 in the final to snag fourth place. Layne's outcome ended Tennessee's four-year run of straight sprint titles at the meet after Cleo Tyson (2005, 2006) and Courtney Champion (2007, 2008) fueled a Big Orange stranglehold over the past several seasons.

Sophomore Annie Alexander (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) and freshman Laquoya Kelly (Nashville, Tenn.), meanwhile, continued to demonstrate improvement in the weight throw. Alexander improved her career best in the event to 57 feet, 9 3/4 inches on her final throw to place fifth out of 31 competitors. Kelly, meanwhile, upped her personal best to 51-9 1/4 to finish 12th. This season is the first time that either Lady Vol has focused on the event, and Alexander now has climbed to fourth on the SEC top marks list.

In the first career indoor pentathlons for freshman Ellen Wortham (Maryville, Tenn.) and Jená Murphy (Memphis, Tenn.), the Lady Vols finished ninth and 12th, respectively. Wortham, who won the Tennessee Class AAA outdoor pentathlon state title last spring with 3,493 points, began her collegiate multi-event career by tallying 3,502 points. Murphy, meanwhile, scored only 2,012 points after failing to chart legal marks in the high jump and long jump.

Wortham's best event was the high jump, where she cleared 5-5 3/4 to place second in that event. She opened the day's competition by finishing seventh in the 60m hurdles in a career-best 9.34. She also was seventh in the long jump with an indoor personal record of 17-9 1/4. In her other two events, she was ninth in the 800 meters in 2:32.03 and 13th in the shot at 28-3. The rookie finished 198 points shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 3,700.

Tennessee begins a full day of activity on Saturday at 10 a.m., and the competition is scheduled to conclude around 6 p.m.
