UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- University of Tennessee distance ace Sarah Bowman carded an NCAA automatic qualifying mark in her third different event this season and anchored the 4x800-meter relay team to victory in a school-record time Saturday to lead the second-ranked Lady Vol track & field team on the final day of the Penn State National Invitational.
Bowman, a senior from Warrenton, Va., came into the meet leading the NCAA ranks with an auto time in the mile (4:35.35) and topping the SEC and rating third nationally in the 3000m (9:11.31). She now has another NCAA leader and her third different auto clocking of the young campaign after winning the 800m with a career-best time of two minutes, 4.58 seconds.
That mark, which blew away her previous personal record of 2:06.59 from 2007, also topped both the meet and facility records at PSU's Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. UT teammate Chanelle Price had the old facility record of 2:04.96, which she recorded as a junior at Easton (Pa.) High School in 2007, while Jill Snyder of adidas carded the former meet record of 2:06.80 back in 2002.
"It was good to see Sarah auto in her third event this season," UT Head Coach J.J. Clark said. "She looked good out there, and it's great to see the balance with those three events and that she is strong in every area. I've never had someone auto in the 800m, mile and 3K in the same season. It's something that is not very common."
Bowman returned to the oval later in the day and carried the baton to the finish line as Tennessee won the 4x8 by nearly 11 seconds in a program-best time of 8:34.32. She joined senior Kimarra McDonald (Lumberton, N.J.), junior Phoebe Wright (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) and rookie Price to erase the former UT record of 8:35.32, set by Shawn Moore, Alicia Johnson, Valerie Bertrand and Jasmin Jones at the 1990 NCAA Indoor Championships. The 2009 Lady Vols also toppled the meet and facility standards in the process.
Tennessee now owns Penn State National Invitational meet records in the 200m, 800m, 4x4, 4x8 and distance medley relay. The Lady Vols hold facility marks in the 60m, 200m, 800m, 4x4, 4x8 and DMR.
"Even though they don't run this event at the NCAA meet anymore, that was a legitimate mark by our team today," Clark said. "There have been a lot of great 800m runners come through the Tennessee program, and the top times in our program all were set when those folks were at their peak, competing for NCAA or AIAW Championships. For these young ladies to break that record is truly outstanding."
During the morning session, Price charted Tennessee's first victory of the day. The facility's former record-holder at 800 meters, the rookie from Easton, Pa., got some work in today in the 500m. Her 1:13.25 readout in a five-section final with 29 entries was more than a second faster than the runner-up, Lhayana Dallas of UConn.
After charting a career best to place fifth in the weight throw on Friday night, sophomore Annie Alexander (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) returned on Saturday to win the shot put title. Her NCAA provisional heave of 53-5 3/4, which came on her second attempt, was nearly a foot farther than that of runner-up Tynisha McMillian of UConn. The triumph was the fifth indoors in the shot for her and her 18th win combined in all throws events, indoors or out, during her brief UT career.
The NCAA leader in the 800 meters until Bowman's heroics today, Wright got some individual speed work in by entering the 400m. The middle distance All-American nearly came away with a victory in the long sprint, finishing second in a career-best 55.06. Only West Virginia's April Rotilio was faster, covering the two-lap race in 54.64.
Seniors Katie Van Horn (Glendora, N.J.) and Alicia Essex (Purcellville, Va.), and freshman Ramzee Fondren (Detroit, Mich.) also posted top-three outcomes. Van Horn took third in the Invitational 3000m in 9:40.13, followed by senior Rolanda Bell (Laurelton, N.Y.) in sixth with a PR of 9:44.28. Essex cleared 12-8 to tie for third in the pole vault, while Fondren snagged third in the open 800m in 2:13.41.
Elsewhere, junior Lynne Layne (New Rochelle, N.Y.) matched her fourth-place effort in the 60m Friday with the same outcome in the Invitational 200m (24.32), junior Jackie Areson (Delray Beach, Fla.) was seventh in the Invitational mile in 4:48.75, and the UT 4x400m relay tandem of Jená Murphy (Memphis, Tenn.), freshmen Elizabeth Altizer (Bartlett, Tenn.), freshman Ally Colvin (Maryville, Tenn.) and junior Michele Levy (Rockville, Md.) finished ninth in 3:48.47.
"As a team, we had some promising performances at this meet," Clark said. "Celriece lowered her hurdles time, and Lynne showed consistency in the short sprint, and we got Brittany Jones back into the mix in the 4x4 today. I look forward to what we are capable of doing with those three young ladies as the season progresses.
"It also was good to see Chanelle back in good form. We've done a lot of work in the past couple of weeks, and she wasn't extremely sharp, but she is definitely not far off from doing some great things. I thought Phoebe Wright also got some good work in with the 400, and she ran a very tough race.
"Annie Alexander winning the shot was another good, solid accomplishment, and we had several others come away with personal bests from this meet. I feel like our team is making progress as we move toward to the middle part of our indoor season."
The Lady Vols are back in action next Friday and Saturday, as they travel to New York City for the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the famed Armory.
