NEW YORK -- The second-ranked University of Tennessee women's track & field team closed out its stay in the Big Apple by carding a trio of NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the distance events Saturday at the New Balance Track & Field Center in the famed Armory.
Senior Katie Van Horn (Glendora, N.J.) etched her name on the NCAA provisional qualifying list in the 5000 meters. She did so by finishing second in the championship division of that distance in a season-best 16:37.00, just missing victory after being nipped at the line by BYU's Cecily Lemmon (16:36.77). That mark ranks eighth nationally and fourth in the Southeastern Conference this season.
"In the 5K, Katie ran a season best, and she gave a good effort there," UT Head Coach J.J. Clark said. "The competition wasn't as steep as we would have liked it to be, but she always gives her best. That is what I am proud of."
In the championship division of the mile run, senior Rolanda Bell (Laurelton, N.Y.) and junior Jackie Areson (Delray Beach, Fla.) broke through with their first provisional marks of the campaign. Bell came from behind to win heat one and place sixth overall in the field in a career-best 4:46.41. Areson, meanwhile, charged right behind Bell in the opening heat to finish second and card seventh-place overall honors in 4:46.90. She was just shy of eclipsing her PR as well.
"Rolanda looked great in the mile, getting her first provisional as a Lady Vol," Clark said. "Her hard work is starting to show through, and I look forward to seeing her continue in that positive direction next week.
"Jackie was consistent, running her fastest time this season and just off her personal best to give us another provisional. They all three performed with a big heart and great character, and it is good to see them coming around as we approach our SEC meet."
Tennessee's 4x400m relay unit posted its fastest clocking of the campaign, covering the distance in 3:44.40 to place second in the college division. The only team better than UT's combo of freshman Ellen Wortham (Maryville, Tenn.), junior Phoebe Wright (Signal Mountain, Tenn.), freshman Chanelle Price (Easton, Pa.) and senior Kimarra McDonald (Lumberton, N.J.) was BYU, which won in 3:41.20.
In the college division of the 800 meters, freshman Ramzee Fondren (Detroit, Mich.) turned in a third-place finish in 2:14.04. Senior teammate Kimarra McDonald (Lumberton, N.J.), meanwhile, was about two seconds behind her in a season-best 2:15.94 to place 13th.
In the prelims of the championship 200 meters, junior Lynne Layne (New Rochelle, N.Y.) was the fastest of three Lady Vols, but she was unable to move on to the final. She clocked in 13th overall in a time of 24.26.
After battling back from a late week stomach illness to win the championship shot put on Friday night, sophomore Annie Alexander (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) was able to muster enough strength Saturday to place 15th in the weight throw. Her mark of record was 51-4 1/4. Freshman Laquoya Kelly, meanwhile, was 28th at 48-0 3/4.
In the college division of the mile, freshman Ally Colvin (Maryville, Tenn.) charted a personal best of 5:13.10 to place 28th, while classmate Elizabeth Altizer (Bartlett, Tenn.) crossed the finish line 32nd in 5:13.65.
Tennessee heads home tonight and starts gearing up for next weekend's Tyson Invitational. The meet will be held Friday and Saturday at the Tyson Indoor Track & Field Complex on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville.
"We have our last meet before SECs coming up, and that gives us a chance to reboot," Clark said. "Most of us are using these meets to qualify, and some are to enhance training. I really like the meets we picked, and things are going well for us."
