FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Caitlin Ward was fourth-ranked Tennessee's first competitor in the Southeastern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, and, unfortunately, the UT multi-eventer came away without providing the Lady Vols points in the pentathlon Friday night at the Randal Tyson Track Center.

After she registered a sixth-place effort a year ago in SEC competition, there was hope for bigger things in 2005 for Ward. It was not to be at this meet, however, as the UT junior tallied 3,436 points and had to settle for 11th place. Beyonka McDowell of Arkansas edged Vanderbilt's Josie Hahn for the title, collecting 10 points for the Lady Razorbacks with a score of 4,076 to Hahn's 4,046 count.

Arkansas and Georgia tied for the day one lead with 10 points each, followed by Vanderbilt with eight, Ole Miss and LSU with five, and Mississippi State with one.

Ward started the evening by registering a career-best time of 9.23 in the 60-meter hurdles. The Gibsonia, Pa., native garnered 862 points for her clocking and finished 15th among all the contestants. Her readout was significantly faster than her previous season best of 9.61 at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Jan. 14.

In event two, Ward managed a clearance of 4-11/1.50m in the high jump to tie for 18th. She garnered 621 points to bring her two-event tally to 1,483, standing at 17th overall.

Ward moved back up in the overall standings with her effort in the shot put, tying her pentathlon best in that event at 37-0.50/11.29m to garner 614 points and take fifth. That scoring spree increased her cumulative point total to 2,097 and moved her into 13th place overall. The heave matched her performance in the pentathlon at the Penn State Open on Jan. 30, 2004.

In the long jump, Ward stretched the tape to 17-1.25/5.21m, collecting 617 points and placing 15th. That result dropped the junior to 16th place after four events with 2,714 points.

Ward capped off the night and the competition with a run of 2:27.69 to take fifth in the 800 meters. That mark earned her 722 points and moved her to a final finish of 11th with 3,436 points.

The Lady Volunteers will spring into action in full force on Saturday, as 22 athletes compete in 10 different events. Among the finals being contested on day two are the pole vault, which kicks things off at noon Central time, the long jump, the shot put and the 3000 meters. The 3K is the final event of the day and is slated to begin at 6:35 p.m. CT.
