LEXINGTON, Ky.

University of Tennessee sophomore Caitlin Ward provided the sixth-ranked Lady Vols with a crucial jump-start on day one of the 2004 Southeastern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, landing a sixth-place finish in the pentathlon and securing three points for UT on Friday night at E.J. Nutter Fieldhouse.

Sitting in 13th place entering the final event, Ward gamely closed out her second pentathlon this season and the third of her career by leading the 800 meters wire-to-wire and winning in a personal-record 2:20.44. That reading, which bettered her prior PR of 2:20.95 at the Penn State National Open earlier this season, earned her 818 points, resulting in a climb from 13th to sixth in the final standings with a score of 3,636.

"We're off to a good start," second-year Lady Vol Head Coach J.J. Clark said. "Caitlin opened with a PR in the 60-meter hurdles and closed with a big PR in the 800 meters. She competed hard and gave us an important three points, and we have to build on that tomorrow."

Ward began the evening with a career-best time of 9.24 in the 60-meter hurdles to generate 860 points. That mark, which bettered her previous PR of 9.36 at the Penn State meet on Jan. 30, left her in 14th-place after one event.

Next, the Gibsonia, Pa., product managed to clear four bars in the high jump, including a leap of 5-feet, 1 3/4 inches that netted her 701 points and a tie for 10th place. That clearance, which tied her pentathlon PR, moved her up to 10th place overall with 1,561 points after two events.

In the shot put, Ward collected 594 points for an eighth-place heave of 36 feet, 1/4 inch. Despite that effort, however, she fell to 12th position overall with 2,155 points.

The fourth event of the pentathlon, the long jump, resulted in a leap of 17 feet, 7 1/2 inches that was good enough for 663 points and a ninth-place outcome. The effort left her in 13th place with 2,818 points heading into the final event.

In the decisive 800, Ward jumped out front quickly and held off challenges throughout the race from Vanderbilt's Josie Hahn and Florida's Christina Regan to claim victory. Hahn, of Clinton, Tenn., crossed the line second in 2:21.21 and wound up third overall with 3,917 points. Georgia's Hyleas Fountain won her second-consecutive SEC Pentathlon crown, rolling to an NCAA automatic-qualifying score of 4,417. Chelsea Hammond of South Carolina was second at 4,133.

Action resumes at 10 a.m. on Saturday and concludes around 7:30 p.m. Sunday's final day of events also begins at 10 a.m. and is scheduled to wind up around 5 p.m.
