BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The University of Tennessee women had two entries competing at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier on Saturday afternoon, and both were victorious in a last chance track & field meet at Virginia Tech's Rector Field House.
Freshman Chanelle Price improved her season best and NCAA provisional time in the 800 meters to two minutes, 6.68 seconds. That mark was good for first-place honors by nearly three seconds over Central Florida's Shantelle Blackburn (2:09.61). While Price moved up the NCAA qualifiers list from 20th to 17th, she'll have to wait for Monday night's announcement by the NCAA to see whether she'll be competing in that event at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 13-14.
Regardless of her fate in the 800, Price will be running on UT's No.1-ranked distance medley relay in College Station next weekend. The DMR, though, will be the Big Orange's only relay taking part in the national meet, as the 4x400m relay contingent of Price, Phoebe Wright, Ellen Wortham and Kimarra McDonald was unable to improve its season best of 3:39.57. With only one other team in the race (Virginia Commonwealth, 3:57.23) and no one to push them, the Lady Vols covered the distance in only 3:42.29 for the win.
