Lady Vols Load Up on Regional Marks at Pepsi Florida Relays

April 3, 2009

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The fourth-ranked University of Tennessee women's track & field team entered the 2009 Pepsi Florida Relays with three NCAA regional qualifiers already in the bag. Head coach J.J. Clark's Lady Vols added to that total in a significant way Friday on the first of two days of competition at UF's Percy Beard Track.

When the dust had settled, the Big Orange had collected seven more regional marks and brought their season total to 10 already in just the second meet this season.

"We're getting the ball rolling again and qualifying people who are expected to qualify and be factors down the road," UT Head Coach J.J. Clark said. "We're not trying to do it all in one meet. We'd like to distribute the performances throughout the season, and so far we're off to a good start.

"It was a good day for us. It was supposed to rain, and the weather held off. We're looking forward to Saturday and continued progress."

Senior Sarah Bowman and junior Jackie Areson, who already had qualified for the NCAA regional meet in the 5000 meters at the Stanford Invitational last Friday night, punched their tickets in the 1500 meters in Tennessee's first event of this weekend's meet. Bowman covered the distance in four minutes, 16.47 seconds to hold off Florida's Charlotte Browning (4:20.22) by nearly four seconds for the victory. Areson booked her second regional mark of the season by hitting the finish line in a career-best 4:27.64 to take sixth. Senior Rolanda Bell just missed the regional cut of 4:27.80 with her seventh-place effort of 4:28.41.

Junior Phoebe Wright also registered her second regional qualifying effort of the young campaign. After making the grade in the 1500 meters at Stanford last weekend, she took care of business in the 800m on Friday. Her effort of 2:04.92 earned her a trip to Louisville, Ky., for the Mideast Regional meet on May 29-30 and stood up for first-place honors. Freshman Chanelle Price got the job done as well, meeting the regional plateau in 2:07.78 and finishing third.

In the 100-meter hurdles, senior Celriece Law posted the fastest mark by a collegian and finished tied for fourth overall at 13.45 behind four professional runners. Nike's Damu Cherry hit the tape first in 12.69, running in the same heat as the next three finishers. Law ran her time in heat two, winning that section over former teammate and current Central Florida standout Tiki James (13.47).

Junior Lynne Layne joined the qualifiers club in the 100-meter dash, scooting down the straightaway in 11.62 to finish ninth overall and fourth among collegians. She had a legal 1.6 meters per second wind at her back. Former Lady Vol Tianna Madison, fueled by an illegal wind of 4.2 mps, claimed victory in 11.25.

Senior Alicia Essex added the icing on the cake with UT's seventh qualifying performance of the day. Her clearance of 13-1 1/2 was good for fifth place in the pole vault and a career best. Her previous top outdoor mark had been 12-7 1/2.

In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Ellen Wortham nearly punched her ticket to the Mideast meet. Her career-best 1:01.03 result left her just shy of the 1:00.82 regional mark and 12th out of 56 competitors.

In Tennessee's only relay action of the day, the quartet of Law, Layne, freshman Ashley Harris and sophomore Brittany Jones finished 12th in the 4x200m relay in 1:38.10. Freshman Akeela Bravo was the best of four Lady Vols in the hammer throw, registering a personal record toss of 150-11 to finish 15th.

The Lady Vols return to action on Saturday at noon and are slated to have entrants in nine events.
