GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- University of Tennessee sophomore Annie Alexander qualified for the regional meet in a pair of events, and the Lady Vol 4x800-meter relay team clocked one of the fastest times in school history Saturday on the final day of the Pepsi Florida Relays at Percy Beard Track.
Alexander made her season debut in the discus throw a successful one, registering a toss of 173 feet, four inches to claim victory and earn a trip to the NCAA Mideast Regional meet in Louisville, Ky., on May 29-30. It marked the 10th discus victory of her career in 14 competitions. Freshman teammate Akeela Bravo was 16th in a career best 136-10.
The All-American thrower came back later in the day to record a third-place outcome and chart a regional mark in the shot put. Alexander's heave of 56 feet left her behind only professional athlete Liz Wanless of New York Athletic Club (60-0 1/4) and Florida's Mariam Kevkhishvili (59-2 1/4). Lady Vol rookie Laquoya Kelly was 16th at 44-10 3/4.
Fourth-ranked Tennessee's second victory of the day and its fourth of the meet came in the 4x8, where senior Rolanda Bell, senior Sarah Bowman, junior Phoebe Wright and freshman Chanelle Price covered the distance in 8:29.99. That mark ranks as the fifth best ever run by a UT quartet. UT's "B" lineup of junior Jackie Areson, senior Kimarra McDonald, freshman Chelsea Knotts and sophomore Kim White placed sixth in 9:08.04.
The Lady Vols just missed their third regional mark of the day and what would have been their 10th of the meet in the 4x400m relay. The tandem of freshman Ellen Wortham, Wright, Bowman and Price produced a 3:42.55 readout that earned them 11th place and was just 55/100ths of a second off the regional standard.
Sophomore Holly Kane had UT's only other noteworthy effort on the final day, as she carded a finish of ninth in the javelin with a fling of 124-8.
"It was good to see Annie qualify for regionals in two events with a victorious performance in the discus and a solid effort in the shot," UT Head Coach J.J. Clark said. "We had some other promising moments today, one of which was among the fastest times in school history in the 4x800m relay. We got a lot of work in for the weeks ahead.
"We came up with nine qualifying marks this weekend, which is a good start. We look forward to returning home and getting ready for our home meet next week."
The meet he is referring to is the Sea Ray Relays, which will be held April 8-11 at UT's Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium. Action begins on Wednesday afternoon with the women's heptathlon and the men's decathlon.
