KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Toyin Olupona claimed victory in the 100-meter dash, and Ariel Brooks unleashed another school record in the hammer throw, highlighting a bevy of NCAA regional-qualifying performances by third-ranked Tennessee Friday at the 39th-annual Sea Ray Relays at Tom Black Track.

Olupona, a senior from Orillia, Ontario, Canada, zipped down the TBT straightway in a career-best time of 11.47 seconds to become the second-straight Lady Vol to win the open division of the Sea Rays 100m dash. Tianna Madison won it a year ago as a freshman. Rookie Cleo Tyson (Huntsville, Texas) was right on Olupona's heels, crossing the line second in 11.48 to also earn a ticket to the Mideast Regional in Bloomington, Ind., on May 27-28. They join Madison, who qualified for regionals in the 100m last weekend.

Brooks, meanwhile, began the day in fine fashion for the Lady Vols, charting her third school-record performance in four meets this season. The junior from Miami, Fla., uncorked a throw of 189 feet, three inches on her second attempt of the competition to notch a second-place finish. Kristin Callan of Virginia Tech took the title with a measurement of 197-8. Brooks has now improved the UT mark to 180-2 at the Florida Relays, 182-10 at the Gatorade Classic last weekend and to 189-3 today.

The Barton County (Kan.) Community College product came back later in the day to snare a regional-qualifying mark in the discus. Her throw of 156-5/47.69m was good enough to place her fourth. Freshman Shanna Dickenson (Cincinnati, Ohio) took ninth with a fling of 143-11/43.87m.

In the 400 meters, Tennessee added two more regional qualifiers. Junior Patricia Hall (St. Ann, Jamaica) rolled to a career-best time of 52.97 to take second, and senior Antoinette Gorham (Glenarden, Md.) made the regional field in her second event (800m is the other) with a 53.78 clocking. Hall's effort is fifth-best in the NCAA ranks this season.

"Ariel Brooks continued her improvement with a personal best and another school record in the hammer throw and is putting herself into position to earn an NCAA bid and potentially score," UT Head Coach J.J. Clark said. "Our short sprint corps (Olupona, Tyson) came through with a strong qualifying performance in the 100-meter dash, and Patricia Hall and Antoinette Gorham showed great form in the quarter in earning regional bids. We hope to come out here and get more tomorrow."

In the pole vault, junior Jessica Reust registered a runner-up finish, as the Knoxville native and UT outdoor record-holder cleared a regional-qualifying 12-11.50/3.95m for the second week in a row to finish behind former Georgia standout Fanni Juhasz (13-7.25/4.15m). Reust's classmate, Kendra Rhyne (Andersonville, Tenn.), was 20th at 10-11.75/3.35m.

Sophomore Edra Finley (Mobile, Ala.) continued to perform well in the triple jump, landing a top mark of 40-4.75/12.31m to land a fourth-place finish. She met the regional clip last weekend with a leap of 40-9.75/12.44m.

UT entered the meet with 10 athletes qualified in nine different individual events at the regional meet. On Friday, they added two in the 100 meters, two in the 400 meters and one in the discus, including the 11th individual qualifier, Hall. UT also has its 4x400m relay ticketed for Bloomington.

In other action involving Lady Vols on day three, freshman Amara McKell (Nashville, Tenn.) was 10th in the javelin at 91-6/27.90m, sophomore Mindy Sullivan (Lubbock, Texas) was 14th in the 1500 meters in a career-best 4:33.06 and junior Catherine Wright (Knoxville, Tenn.) was 32nd in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.14 (w: 2.2).

The day also featured a pair of meet and facility records. Tiffany Ross-Williams of South Carolina won the 400m hurdles in a Sea Ray Relays record time of 55.93, while her South Carolina teammates uncorked a 4x200m relay outing of 1:31.64 that broke meet, overall track and collegiate track records. That quartet included Stephanie Smith, Erica Whipple, Amberly Nesbitt and Shalonda Solomon.

Saturday will feature 10 different relay events, with action kicking off at 9:15 a.m. with the men's open hammer and closing at 5:45 p.m. with the men's 4x400m relay. World-leader Tianna Madision (Elyria, Ohio) is ticketed to hit the long jump runway for the Big Orange, as the sophomore's signature event gets underway at 1:30 p.m.

Other Lady Vols to watch include junior April Thomas (Albany, Ga.) in the shot put at 2:30 p.m., school-record-holder Elizabeth McCalley (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the 3000-meter steeplechase at 2:50 p.m., Olupona in the invitational 100-meter dash at 3:20 p.m. and Tyson in the invitational 200-meter dash a 4:15 p.m.

The Lady Vols are also expected to field units on Saturday in the distance medley, 4x800-meter and 4x400-meter relays. UT set Sea Rays and Tom Black Track collegiate records a year ago, charting an 8:28.87 readout on April 10.
