KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Redshirt freshman Chase Brannon made his return home to Nashville a successful one Friday, carding Tennessee's top performance on the first day of the Vanderbilt Invitational track & field meet.

Brannon, who hails from Brentwood and graduated from Brentwood Academy, matched his week-old career best, clearing 16 feet, 6 3/4 inches to seize his first collegiate victory. He won by four inches over Austin Crenshaw of Memphis and now has a victory and a pair of runner-up showings in four outdoor meet appearances in 2011.

Justin Hunter, competing in his first outdoor meet since wrapping up football spring drills last Saturday, carded a wind-aided leap of 25-7 1/2 in the long jump to finish second. Stanley Gbagbeke of Nigeria was the only person to jump farther, sailing to 26-5 1/2 to take top honors. Hunter's effort was bolstered by an illegal 3.1 meters per second wind at his back. Gbagbeke's mark was legal.

Freshman Jazmen Townsend was the sole Lady Vol in action in Music City, placing 12th in the women's long jump at 16-5 1/4.

Tennessee had only its women's throws corps in action at the UCSD Triton Invitational in LaJolla, Calif., on Friday night. Sophomore Jessie Harrison had the best effort of an overall subpar day for the Lady Vols, placing 10th in the open section of the discus throw at 144-1.

Action at both the UCSD Triton Invitational and the Vanderbilt Invitational will resume on Saturday.
