Sophomore Jessica Reust's school-record clearance in the pole vault on Sunday afternoon at the Knoxville Invitational put the finishing touches on an incredible weekend for the 10th-ranked University of Tennessee women's track & field team.

After watching his squad pull off victories in the distance medley, sprint medley and 4x800m relays on consecutive days at the 110th Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Lady Vol Head Coach J.J. Clark was out at Tom Black Track on Sunday as Reust sailed over 13-3.25/4.05m to reset the UT standard. Also cheering on Reust was UT graduate Christie Elwin, the previous owner of the school record, who had vaulted 13-2.25/4.02m on May 30 at the 2003 NCAA Mideast Regional meet in Columbus, Ohio.

Kira Sims of Akron claimed victory in the event Sunday, however, and tied the 2001 Tom Black Track record of Georgia's Thorey Elisdottir with a vault of 13-9.25/4.20m. Reust, from Knoxville, wound up second, while other finishers for the Big Orange included Kendra Rhyne (Andersonville, Tenn.) in third at 11-9.75/3.60m and Jessica Andrews (Rockford, Tenn.) tied for fourth at 11-3.75/3.45m.

In the long jump, sophomore Tianna Madison (Elyria, Ohio) uncorked her longest leap of the season, stretching the tape to 20-9.25/6.33m to take top honors. That mark would have been a career best, indoors or out, had it not been for an illegal gust of 3.4 meters per second that registered on the wind gauge during her attempt. Teammates Edra Finley (Mobile, Ala.) and Caitlin Ward (Gibsonia, Pa.) landed wind-aided jumps of 18-10/5.74m and 17-9.75/5.43m, respectively, to finish fourth and sixth.

Ward, a sophomore, and Finley, a freshman, closed out the day for Tennessee by going one-two in the 400 meters. Ward won in 56.48, while Finley posted a personal best of 57.62 to garner runner-up distinction.

Junior Sara Vigil (Tucson, Ariz.) began the day for the Lady Vols by winning the hammer throw with a best mark of 149-10/45.68m. Junior Toyin Olupona (Orillia, Ontario, Canada) followed that up in the first running event of the meet, winning the 100-meter dash in 11.73 with a just-legal wind reading of 2.0 meters per second. Sophomore Catherine Wright (Knoxville, Tenn.) was second at 13.23.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Tennessee sported three career-best times. Finley clocked a career-topper in 14.34 to take third, while Wright and Ward were sixth and seventh, respectively, in PR times of 15.78 and 15.93. All three ran with a legal wind of 1.4 mps at their backs.

Olupona came back later in the afternoon to seize the 200-meter dash title as well, winning in 24.34. Ward was third in 25.15, while fourth-place Finley (25.43) and seventh-place Wright (27.28) notched career bests. Wright ran with a barely allowable 2.0 wind, while the other trio had a 1.8 gust to help move them along.

In the only other event contested by the home team, the Lady Vols finished first through sixth in the 800-meter run. Junior Antoinette Gorham (Glenarden, Md.) charted a victorious effort of 2:12.67 to edge runner-up redshirt freshman Mindy Sullivan (Lubbock, Texas), who covered the distance in 2:14.91. The other finishers are listed on the results that follow.

"We are continuing to work on technical aspects so that we are prepared for SECs, regionals and the NCAA meet," Clark said. "Jessica Reust broke the school record in the pole vault today at 13-3.25, which is outstanding, and we had a few others PRs. This just caps off a grand weekend for the Lady Vols, and demonstrates that our competitive level is in full gear."

Tennessee will return to action next weekend, joining the UT men's team once again in playing host to the Gatorade Classic on May 1-2 at UT's Tom Black Track.
